LIV Golf players convene meeting led by Bryson DeChambeau as league faces funding uncertainty
LIV Golf players, led by Bryson DeChambeau, held a private meeting to discuss the league's future after the Saudi Public Investment Fund withdrew its financing, with the upcoming Team Championship in Michigan uncertain.
Bryson DeChambeau chaired a players-only meeting with fellow LIV Golf members as the league grapples with the loss of funding from the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund. The gathering took place amid reports that the late-August Team Championship in Michigan, which carries a $40 million purse, could be cancelled.
"Bryson just ran through what he knows, and obviously, we're trying to do it as a group, but we're individuals as well, so I think the next two to three weeks is going to be where it's at," English golfer Richard Bland told reporters.
"We're in this together; we're fully backing [LIV CEO Scott O'Neil]. I think probably in the next two to three weeks we'll have a bigger picture. We're just in that kind of stage at the minute that we're positive with what's going on, but we just need everything to be fully signed off so you can go forward."
League officials are seeking alternatives to restart operations without PIF support, while the New Orleans event remains postponed and the Asian Tour has aligned with the PGA and DP World Tours. Player Cameron Smith said the group is preparing for the Michigan tournament despite uncertainty.
"We've been told to prepare as though it's going ahead. So we're expecting it to happen. I'm really unsure, but we had a great year there last year in Detroit, and we're hoping we get back there."
Analysts note that players considering a return to the PGA Tour could face financial restrictions under the Returning Member Program, though such constraints may be viewed as a viable option if LIV's prospects continue to decline.
