Utah investigates five cyclospora cases with no travel link

Resumen

Utah health officials reported 48 cyclospora infections since May, most tied to travel, while five cases with no travel history remain under investigation.

The Utah Department of Health and Human Services said Tuesday that 48 cyclospora infections have been reported in the state since May 1. Of those, 31 individuals had traveled abroad, 12 had traveled to other U.S. states, and five reported no travel outside Utah. The department indicated that the five non-travel cases are still being investigated and that several patients have not yet been interviewed.

Cyclospora, a microscopic parasite that can cause diarrhea and dehydration, typically peaks in the spring and summer. This year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded more than 18,000 cases nationwide, a figure above the usual seasonal level.

Although a recall of iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms in Mexico has been linked to cyclospora outbreaks elsewhere, Utah officials confirmed that none of the recalled product has been distributed in the state. The CDC notes that the current outbreak spans nine states, but Utah is not among them.
