Eagles defensive line dominates while offensive line struggles in Day 5 camp practice

Résumé

Philadelphia Eagles' defensive front showed strong play on Day 5 of training camp, recording multiple sacks, while the offensive line faced miscommunications and penalties, and quarterback Jalen Hurts had a mixed performance.

Philadelphia Eagles' defensive line outperformed the offensive unit during the fifth day of training camp, generating several sacks and pressures. Defensive tackle Jalen Carter recorded a sack after a club move on Tyler Steen and later helped teammate Nolan Smith reach the quarterback unblocked. Smith also forced a misdirection play into the end zone, disrupting a pass to Tank Bigsby. Linebackers Zack Baun and Jihaad Campbell added edge blitz sacks, and Jordan Davis consistently occupied multiple blockers without allowing gains.

The Eagles' interior line also saw contributions from Byron Young, who delivered a quick pressure and is expected to serve as a backup interior lineman. Defensive end Moro Ojomo performed well against the backup offensive line, matching up against Landon Dickerson and other reserves.

Conversely, the offensive line struggled with coordination and penalties, including several holding and dead-ball infractions. A misread by Fred Johnson allowed Jalyx Hunt an unblocked sack after a pre-snap adjustment. The unit also failed to protect quarterback Jalen Hurts on multiple plays, leading to a deep pass intercepted by Michael Carter and a dropped wheel route by Will Shipley.

Hurts showed some positive moments, connecting with wide receiver Quez Watkins on a deep ball and developing rhythm with rookie Dontayvion Wicks, who recorded a well-timed out-breaker and a contested curl route. Wicks also displayed effective blocking, though a brief altercation with Andrew Mukuba occurred after a play.

Among the offensive contributors, tight end/fullback Cameron Latu impressed with a physical block on a misdirection play and aggressive special-teams coverage. Undrafted rookie Joshua Weru demonstrated speed in one-on-one drills and a strong bull rush against larger linemen, drawing attention from coaches.
