Detroit Lions highlight six players after Day 6 of training camp
The Lions wrapped up the first week of camp with a lengthy padded practice, noting notable performances from Alim McNeill, Nick Whiteside, Jabari Small, Damone Clark, and Sam LaPorta.
The Detroit Lions concluded the first week of training camp with a second padded practice that lasted longer than usual. Observers identified six players who stood out during the session.
Defensive tackle Alim McNeill impressed teammates with back-to-back runs that resulted in a tackle for loss and a forced fumble. Starting right guard Tate Ratledge praised McNeill, saying he has become "explosive" and "strong" compared with the previous season.
Cornerback Nick Whiteside earned a promotion after competing in one-on-one drills against top receivers. Although he lost a matchup to Amon-Ra St. Brown, he rebounded by defeating Isaac TeSlaa and later contributed to a fourth-and-10 stop against Jameson Williams in a situational drill.
Running back Jabari Small received praise from coach Campbell for his low center of gravity and lateral quickness. Small participated in first-team offensive drills, delivering a decisive cut and acceleration on a rushing play, and later shared kick-return duties with Tom Kennedy.
Linebacker Damone Clark, a regular on the second-team defense, displayed strong downhill pursuit and run-fit, tackling veteran receiver Greg Dortch on a curl route and contributing on first-team punt coverage.
Pro Bowl tight end Sam LaPorta, who has seen limited action early in camp, showed progress by winning individual matchups, making a 30-yard gain on a corner route, and scoring a short touchdown in a first-team offensive series.
The performances suggest these players are positioning themselves for roster consideration as the Lions finalize their 53-man squad.
