Mitch McConnell skips Kentucky's Fancy Farm picnic due to rehabilitation

摘要

Senator Mitch McConnell did not attend the annual Fancy Farm political picnic in Kentucky, citing ongoing intensive physical therapy after a June fall and related health issues.

Senator Mitch McConnell was absent from the 146th St. Jerome Fancy Farm Picnic in western Kentucky on Aug. 1, as he continues intensive physical therapy following a June fall that required hospitalization and treatment for mild pneumonia. The 84-year-old Republican, who is not seeking re-election, had previously said doctors ordered him to remain in a rehabilitation facility and confirmed he would miss the event.

“There’s no place I’d rather be on the first Saturday in August than with the good people of western Kentucky, feasting on pork and mutton,” McConnell said in a statement released days before the picnic. “I hate that I’ll miss the fun this year, but I’m sending my best wishes to the St. Jerome community for a successful picnic.”

Republican U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, the GOP nominee to succeed McConnell, referenced the senator’s long-standing attendance during his speech and sent well wishes. Democratic candidate Charles Booker raised the question of McConnell’s whereabouts on stage, noting the contrast in health care access.

The event, traditionally featuring political speakers and community activities, proceeded without the senator, with chants of “Where’s Mitch?” heard from some attendees.
