White House officials and Trump urge Ohio GOP Rep. Max Miller to quit congressional race amid abuse allegations
President Trump and senior White House aides have privately asked Rep. Max Miller to withdraw from his Ohio House race following accusations of assault, while Miller says he will stay in the contest and seek an ethics investigation.
Some senior White House officials have expressed a desire for Ohio Republican Rep. Max Miller to abandon his congressional campaign, and President Donald Trump reportedly conveyed the same view in a private conversation, according to U.S. officials familiar with the matter. The call, made on Monday, focused on the allegations that Miller assaulted his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, and their two-year-old daughter, which Miller has denied.
Miller, the GOP nominee, has until 4 p.m. Wednesday to withdraw and allow the party to replace him on the November ballot. He told the president he intends to remain in the race. On Tuesday, Miller announced plans to file paperwork for a congressional ethics investigation to clear his name.
"In light of all the renewed interest in my family affairs I am going to file my own paperwork for an ethics investigation into myself to clear my name from these horrific attacks on myself and family," Miller posted on X.
During an Oval Office briefing, Trump said he considered Miller a "very good person" and would let the families involved resolve the matter.
"Well, it's a very sad thing. I know Max, he's a good person, I mean, I always thought he was a very good person. And I'm going to let the families figure that out," the president told reporters.
Miller responded that withdrawing would betray American values and that he would not succumb to "the court of public opinion," reaffirming his innocence and record of representing constituents.
