Red Sox acquire catcher Adley Rutschman in deadline trade

Boston Red Sox traded three top prospects and a player to be named later to the Baltimore Orioles for catcher Adley Rutschman and Jake Rogers, aiming to strengthen a weak catching position ahead of the postseason.

The Boston Red Sox completed a deadline deal with the Baltimore Orioles, sending right-handed pitching prospects Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, outfielder Enddy Azocar, catcher Carlos Narváez and a player to be named later in exchange for catcher Adley Rutschman and catcher Jake Rogers. Rutschman, a 28-year-old switch-hitting catcher with three All-Star selections, is expected to address the Red Sox’s weakest defensive position. The team hopes his return from a wrist injury will bolster both defense and offense as Boston pursues a deep postseason run after a strong stretch of wins in July and August. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, who has overseen recent trades of several prospects, said the move reflects confidence in the organization’s assessment of its pitching depth and the need for veteran leadership behind the plate. The trade also saw the Red Sox retain top shortstop prospect Franklin Arias, while other recent moves included sending prospect Marcelo Mayer to the San Francisco Giants for left-handed reliever Erik Miller.
