Serviceman Opens Fire in Crimea Village, Killing Four

Résumé

A Russian serviceman shot fellow soldiers and civilians in the Crimean village of Khmelnytske, killing four and wounding four, according to the Sevastopol governor.

A Russian serviceman opened fire in the village of Khmelnytske, part of Sevastopol in Crimea, killing four people and wounding four others, the Moscow-appointed governor of Sevastopol said on Tuesday. The attacker first shot at fellow soldiers, killing one and injuring another, before turning his weapon on civilians, killing three and wounding three more, the governor Mikhail Razvozhayev reported. The gunman was detained and authorities are investigating the incident, though no motive has been disclosed. Crimea was annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014 and serves as a strategic base for Russian forces in the ongoing conflict. Recent Ukrainian attacks have targeted Russian supply routes to the peninsula, leading to fuel shortages.

"The serviceman was detained and law enforcement is investigating the incident," Razvozhayev said.
