Michigan Holds Primary Elections Amid High-Stakes Democratic Senate Contest

Resumen

Michigan voters cast ballots in primaries that include a closely watched Democratic Senate race between Rep. Haley Stevens and former health official Abdul El-Sayed, while other key statewide and congressional nominations are also decided.

Michigan voters went to the polls Tuesday for primary elections that feature a tightly contested Democratic U.S. Senate nomination. Rep. Haley Stevens, a four-term congresswoman from the Detroit suburbs, faces progressive challenger Abdul El-Sayed, a former Wayne County health director who previously ran for governor. The winner will meet Republican former Rep. Mike Rogers, who is running unopposed, in the November general election.

The Senate primary has become a proxy battle between the party’s establishment and its progressive wing. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other establishment figures have endorsed Stevens, while Senators Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have backed El-Sayed. Stevens’ campaign has been supported by tens of millions of dollars in outside spending, including more than $30 million from groups linked to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. El-Sayed’s platform includes Medicare for All, campaign-finance reform and an end to U.S. military aid to Israel.

In addition to the Senate race, voters selected nominees for several competitive House districts and for the open governor’s seat, as incumbent Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is term-limited. The Republican gubernatorial primary pits Trump-endorsed Rep. John James against businessman Perry Johnson, who has invested heavily in advertising. On the Democratic side, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is the leading candidate for governor.

National political groups have poured unprecedented sums into the Senate contest, making it one of the most heavily funded primaries in the country. The influx of outside money has highlighted Israel policy as a point of contention within the Democratic Party, reflecting broader debates over the party’s direction.

Voter turnout in the primaries will shape the balance of power in both chambers of Congress, as several House races could determine whether Republicans retain their narrow majority or Democrats regain control.
