Phillies acquire batting champion Luis Arráez ahead of trade deadline

Résumé

Philadelphia traded for former Giants second baseman Luis Arráez, a three-time batting champion, as the team reshuffles its infield to boost offense.

Philadelphia completed a trade with the San Francisco Giants before the MLB deadline, acquiring left-handed second baseman Luis Arráez, a three-time batting champion and four-time All-Star. Arráez, who is hitting .324 this season and leads the National League in batting average, will join fellow former Marlins pitcher Jesús Luzardo on the Phillies roster.

Luzardo said Arráez brings “a lot of energy” and praised his professionalism and work ethic. Interim manager Don Mattingly called the addition “a huge addition to our lineup” and likened Arráez’s hitting style to that of Tony Gwynn and Wade Boggs.

The acquisition will prompt a defensive realignment: first baseman Bryce Harper is expected to move to the outfield, second baseman Bryson Stott will shift to third base, and third baseman Alec Bohm will take over first base. Arráez will remain at second base, a position he indicated he would not abandon if traded.

In addition to Arráez, Philadelphia received reliever Caleb Kilian from San Francisco and also made separate moves for left-handed reliever Brooks Raley and outfielder Colby Thomas. The team views Arráez as a key piece for the remainder of the season, hoping his contact-oriented approach will complement a lineup that includes several high-variance hitters.
