Brewers acquire pitchers Dustin May and JoJo Romero from Cardinals

Résumé

Milwaukee received starting pitcher Dustin May and reliever JoJo Romero from St. Louis in exchange for two minor-league outfield prospects.

The St. Louis Cardinals traded right-hander Dustin May and right-handed reliever JoJo Romero to the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday. In return, the Cardinals will receive Class-A outfielder Alexander Frías and Double-A outfielder Josiah Ragsdale, both ranked among the team's top 30 prospects. May, who previously moved from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Boston Red Sox at the 2025 deadline, posted a 5.40 ERA over 28 ⅓ innings after that trade. The Cardinals signed him to a one-year contract to bolster a rotation lacking experience, hoping to later trade him for higher-level prospects as part of general manager Chaim Bloom's rebuild plan. Romero, who turns 30 in September, is set to become a free agent after the season. He appeared in 65 games in both 2024 and 2025 and has closing experience, including most of the second half of last season. This year, he recorded a 3.35 ERA over 44 outings for St. Louis, averaging a strikeout per inning. Milwaukee adds the two pitchers to its staff as it pursues another division title, while St. Louis continues to focus on acquiring prospects for its rebuilding effort.
