Guardians, Padres, Yankees and Diamondbacks complete notable deadline trades
Four MLB teams made deadline moves, acquiring pitchers and outfield talent while sending prospects and relievers to their former clubs.
Cleveland acquired left-handed starter Foster Griffin from Washington in exchange for left-handed prospects Will Dion, Josh Hartle, right-hander Kendeglys Virguez and outfielder Nick Mitchell. Griffin, who returned from Japan with a revised pitch mix, is expected to bolster Cleveland’s rotation for the postseason. Washington received a package of fringe prospects, including top-ranked left-hander Josh Hartle.
San Diego added right-hander Casey Mize and infielder Gage Workman from Detroit for left-handed pitchers Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf. Mize, the former No. 1 overall pick, has shown improved control and is projected to be a key starter alongside Michael King and Robbie Ray. Workman provides defensive versatility but is not expected to contribute significantly with the bat. Mayfield and Wolf, both still developing, move to Detroit’s farm system.
New York obtained outfielder Heliot Ramos from San Francisco for infielder Kaeden Kent and left-hander Henry Lalane. Ramos, an All-Star in 2023, offers left-handed power but has seen a decline in recent seasons. The Yankees will have him under team control through 2029. The Giants receive Kent, a promising high-A hitter, and Lalane, a tall left-hander with a strong slider who remains inconsistent.
Arizona traded for outfielder Lars Nootbaar, sending right-hander Daniel Eagen, left-hander Sandro Santana and a player to be named later to St. Louis. Nootbaar provides left-handed power despite uneven production, while the Cardinals acquire a reliever with potential upside in Eagen and a hard-throwing left-hander specialist in Santana.
