Brewers acquire May, Romero and Senzatela to bolster pitching staff

Resumen

Milwaukee added right-hander Dustin May, left-hander JoJo Romero and right-hander Antonio Senzatela in trades with St. Louis and Colorado as the team seeks to deepen its rotation and bullpen ahead of the trade deadline.

Milwaukee completed three deals before the trade deadline, bringing in right-handed starter Dustin May and left-handed reliever JoJo Romero from the St. Louis Cardinals, and right-handed reliever Antonio Senzatela from the Colorado Rockies. The trades also sent left-hander Mark Manfredi and shortstop Juan Martinez to Colorado.

The acquisitions address the Brewers’ need for additional starting depth and experienced bullpen arms. May, a 28-year-old who signed a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2026, posted a 2.54 ERA over a dozen starts for St. Louis before recent struggles raised his ERA to 6.26 in his last seven outings. Romero, who missed time after an emergency appendectomy in July, has recorded sub-3.40 ERAs in each of his last three seasons and is expected to be ready by month’s end. Senzatela, a veteran who transitioned to full-time relief this season, posted a 3.61 ERA over 34 appearances.

"I overlapped a little bit with him in Boston, and he’s a great guy with great stuff," said left-hander Kyle Harrison, who is also joining Milwaukee’s rotation.

All three players are on contracts that could make them short-term rentals: May earns $12.5 million this season with a $20 million mutual option for 2027; Romero is paid $4.26 million and will become a free agent after the season; Senzatela is in the final year of a five-year, $50.5 million deal and carries a $14 million club option for 2027.
