Chiefs evaluate rookies and veterans in first full-pads practice at Missouri Western
Kansas City head coach Andy Reid highlighted the progress of rookie defensive tackle Peter Woods and discussed competition at right tackle during the team's first full-pads session of training camp.
Kansas City held its fifth training-camp practice on a sunny day at Missouri Western State University, marking the first session with players in full pads. Head coach Andy Reid briefed the media, noting that wide receivers Cyrus Allen and Xavier Worthy and defensive end Ashton Gillotte were absent.
Rookie defensive tackle Peter Woods drew attention for his aggressive play against offensive linemen. Reid said, "I like what I’ve seen. He’s an explosive kid. He’s learning; he’s smart, and he’s trying to hone in on some of these techniques we’re asking him to do. I like his effort. He’s got a ways to go, but you sure like the tools, the effort and how smart he is."
Right guard Trey Smith, who faced Woods in a one-on-one drill, praised the rookie, stating, "Peter’s really talented. The sky is the limit for him. In terms of his hand utilization, speed, power, he’s a full-package guy. He’s young and figuring out the game, but he has a willingness to learn."
Reid also commented on the performance of wide receiver Andrew Armstrong, saying the quarterback appears to trust him, and noted incremental improvement from second-year receiver Jalen Royals. At right tackle, rookie Kahlil Benson started the fourth consecutive practice, while veteran Jaylon Moore rotated in, prompting Reid to say, "Let them compete, and just see where it goes. Both of them can play."
Reid emphasized the importance of learning from mistakes, adding, "Not to make the same mistake twice, right? That’s what I’m looking for."
Second-year running back Brashard Smith continued to see significant work as a backup to Kenneth Walker, with Reid observing his ability to run, catch, and protect on passing plays.
