Disney Cancels Renewed Marvel Series "Wonder Man" After One Season
Marvel's "Wonder Man," starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, was renewed for a second season before Disney reversed the decision and cancelled the show, offering no public explanation.
Disney announced that the Marvel series "Wonder Man" will not return for a second season, reversing an earlier renewal decision made just two months after the show premiered. The series, which follows superhero Simon Williams as he secretly auditions for a Hollywood remake of his own comic, had achieved strong viewership on Disney+ and earned an Emmy nomination for its lead actor, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
The cancellation was reported on July 30, with the company declining to provide a specific reason. Abdul-Mateen posted on Instagram that the news was unexpected but expressed gratitude to fans.
"Word just dropped that Wonder Man won’t be coming back. That’s life, right? Everything will shake out... The show worked. And that’s my favorite thing about it," he wrote.
Showrunner Andrew Guest addressed the situation on TikTok, confirming that contracts had been signed and production was slated to begin early next year, but an internal decision by Disney and Marvel led to the reversal.
"This is not a marketing stunt. There is no movie in the works, and Destin’s schedule and no one’s schedule was an issue... The writers’ room was supposed to start this month. The production was supposed to begin early next year, and there was a decision made internally between Disney and Marvel that this didn’t make sense for them, even though a few months ago it did," Guest said.
The series had received generally positive reviews, with critics noting its human-scale storytelling within a superhero setting, though some felt execution fell short of its ambition.
