Rays reportedly target Marlins catcher Liam Hicks ahead of trade deadline

Résumé

The Tampa Bay Rays are said to be negotiating a trade for Marlins catcher Liam Hicks, who has posted a .283 average with 14 home runs this season.

The Tampa Bay Rays are reportedly in talks to acquire 27-year-old catcher Liam Hicks from the Miami Marlins, according to MLB insiders Jeff Passan and Ken Rosenthal. Hicks has been a productive hitter this season, posting a .283/.364/.434 slash line with 14 home runs and 62 RBIs over 405 plate appearances.

"The Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, White Sox, Rangers and Dodgers are among the teams looking to acquire a catcher," reported MLB.com senior writer Jeff Feinsand.

Hicks' performance has drawn interest as the Marlins' recent losing streak pushed them out of playoff contention, making the catcher a potential trade asset. Miami currently has rookie catcher Joe Mack receiving regular playing time, which could render Hicks expendable if a suitable deal is reached.

Since returning from the injured list at the end of June, Hicks has hit .333/.356/.381 in 45 plate appearances and continues to be a regular in the Marlins' lineup. His overall season numbers include a .796 OPS and a .289/.362/.459 line through 338 plate appearances.

The Rays, who have been active in the catcher market, are expected to evaluate Hicks as part of their roster planning before the upcoming trade deadline.
