MLB Trade Deadline Approaches with Several Starters and Shortstops Likely to Move
Anonymous team sources say the Seattle Mariners, Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox are among clubs evaluating trades for controllable starting pitchers and shortstops as the deadline nears.
Anonymous league sources told The Athletic that the Seattle Mariners are actively considering offers for right-hander George Kirby, who has more than two years of contract control, and left-hander Emerson Hancock, who has over four years of control. An executive noted that the Angels’ early-day trade of José Soriano to Toronto creates a clear opportunity for Seattle to acquire a starter with multiple years of control. The Yankees, Phillies, Red Sox, Brewers and Guardians are also reported to be shopping for starting pitching.
The Colorado Rockies, after sending outfielder Brenton Doyle to the Chicago White Sox, are expected to move right-hander reliever Antonio Senzatela, whose fastball averages 97 mph and who posted a 3.61 ERA over 52 ⅓ innings this season.
The Texas Rangers are reportedly willing to part with left-hander MacKenzie Gore, acquired last offseason, in exchange for a starter with longer contract control, according to a source close to the organization.
The New York Mets have already moved several pitchers, including Freddy Peralta and A.J. Minter, and still have right-hander Clay Holmes and outfielders Luis Robert Jr. and Tyrone Taylor listed as available.
In Boston, the Red Sox are focused on adding a shortstop, with the Nationals’ CJ Abrams and the Angels’ Zach Neto mentioned as potential targets, though one source said the team is hearing only shortstop inquiries.
The Miami Marlins are open to trading from their bullpen as the reliever market heats up, though they may retain free-agent Pete Fairbanks, who is a game away from the NL wild-card race.
The Washington Nationals appear unlikely to trade All-Star shortstop CJ Abrams before the deadline, according to a source familiar with the club’s thinking, though the possibility has not been completely ruled out.
