Two Michigan Residents Die Amid Large Cyclosporiasis Outbreak

Resumen

Health officials said two Michigan patients with underlying conditions died from cyclosporiasis, the first fatalities linked to the nationwide outbreak that has infected over 11,000 people in the state.

Health authorities in Michigan confirmed Monday that two residents have died after contracting cyclosporiasis, marking the first known fatalities associated with the multi-state outbreak of the parasite. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said both decedents had serious pre-existing health issues that may have been worsened by the infection and dehydration, and declined to release further details.

The department noted that cyclosporiasis is usually not life-threatening, but the outbreak has resulted in 11,234 reported cases in Michigan, including 193 hospitalizations. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported awareness of the two deaths and highlighted that the parasite, which can contaminate fresh produce and water, often leads to severe diarrhea.

Nationwide, the CDC has identified more than 18,000 cases of cyclosporiasis this season, with 6,707 confirmed and roughly 11,500 under further laboratory review. The outbreak, which typically peaks from May through August, is unusually large this year. Federal and state agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, are investigating multiple clusters, and a recall has been issued for iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms.

"Two deaths have been identified as part of the cyclosporiasis outbreak affecting Michigan. According to medical records, both individuals had significant underlying health conditions that may have been impacted by cyclosporiasis and dehydration. No additional information will be provided on these two cases," the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said.
