Yankees acquire Nationals' power hitter Luis García Jr. for four pitchers

Résumé

The New York Yankees traded for first baseman Luis García Jr., sending four right-handed pitchers and two prospects to Washington, as both clubs address roster needs.

The Washington Nationals dealt first baseman Luis García Jr. to the New York Yankees on Sunday. In return, the Yankees sent four right-handed pitchers—rookie Yovanny Cruz, veteran Jake Bird, and two minor-league arms, Jack Cebert and Ben Grable—to Washington.

García, 26, has posted career highs in home runs and RBIs this season and has been a key component of Washington’s offensive surge. He is known for his power against right-handed pitching, though his performance against lefties has been less consistent.

Yankees outfielder José Caballero, who will be García’s teammate, said, "I know that he’s a great hitter. I just saw the news. Excited to see him here and what he can contribute to the team, for sure."

The pitchers heading to Washington include Cruz, a 26-year-old rookie who throws a 100-mph fastball and a developing slider, and Bird, 30, who posted a 5.93 ERA this season. Prospects Cebert and Grable have posted solid numbers in Double-A, with ERAs of 4.03 and 2.45 respectively.

The trade follows recent Yankees moves aimed at bolstering offense after earlier deadline acquisitions underperformed. The club plans to use García primarily against right-handed pitchers, with potential adjustments for other positions depending on roster needs.

García expressed gratitude to the Nationals after the trade, saying through an interpreter, "I’m leaving with a lot of great memories. All I can say is that I love this organization."

Washington manager Blake Butera praised García’s impact, noting, "He’s an unbelievable person, an unbelievable teammate, unbelievable leader for this clubhouse, unbelievable player. However this shakes out, we’ll always love Luis. He can always play on my team."

The exchange gives the Nationals a bulk of pitching prospects as they seek to reinforce a staff that has struggled, while the Yankees add a power bat to address a perceived offensive shortfall.
