Jerry Jones backs Tony Romo after OWI arrest, says he will overcome setback

Résumé

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed continued support for former quarterback Tony Romo following his arrest on suspicion of operating while intoxicated, while CBS has placed Romo on leave.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he remains supportive of former quarterback Tony Romo after the former NFL player was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence in Wisconsin. Romo, who has been CBS’s lead NFL analyst since 2017, was placed on leave by the network on July 31 and will not appear on air until further notice.

"I love him. I love what he's about. I love his character. I love his love of sport. And he's a very, very unique talent. And the real question is – and I don't even have to ask what the answer is: Do you think Tony Romo knows how to get up when he gets knocked down? He had a life of that. And absolutely, that's one of his greatest attributes, is that he can handle adversity," Jones told KDFW Fox 4.

"This is something that he will work through. Obviously, I'm a big fan of his, big fan of his family, and let me tell you right now, he's as real as he sounds. He feels every down time, he feels every up time," the owner added.

Romo, who spent his entire 13-year playing career with the Cowboys before moving into broadcasting, still has four years and $72 million remaining on his contract with CBS, signed in 2020. He is scheduled to appear in court on September 21. CBS plans to fill his on-air role with former Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt alongside veteran play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz.
