Trump administration proposes sub-$1 billion Smithsonian budget

Résumé

The White House budget request for fiscal years 2026 and 2027 would reduce the Smithsonian Institution's annual funding to below $1 billion for the first time since 2020, accompanying a review aimed at changing exhibits and programming.

The Trump administration has submitted budget proposals that would lower the Smithsonian Institution's annual federal funding to under $1 billion for fiscal years 2026 and 2027, marking the first such reduction since fiscal year 2020. The request follows a 16-month review in which the White House examined museum exhibits, educational programs, internal records and leadership statements, culminating in a 162-page report that recommends extensive reforms.

The administration argues that the Smithsonian should present a more accurate portrayal of American history and has directed the agency to adjust its exhibits, programming, leadership and spending priorities. The Smithsonian, which oversees 21 museums, the National Zoo and nearly 157 million objects, typically receives more than $1 billion in annual federal funding in addition to private donations.

The proposed budget cuts are part of a broader effort by the White House to reshape federally funded cultural institutions, though it remains uncertain whether Congress will adopt the lower funding levels. The Smithsonian did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
