Cowboys owner says former quarterback Tony Romo will address Wisconsin OWI arrest

Summary

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed confidence that former quarterback Tony Romo will work through his recent operating while intoxicated arrest, while CBS Sports placed the analyst on leave.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told a local TV interview that he has been in contact with former quarterback-turned-broadcaster Tony Romo and believes the former player will work through his recent arrest in Wisconsin for operating a vehicle while under the influence. Romo was stopped on July 23 after police observed signs of impairment and an open container of alcohol in his vehicle. He declined a breath test, citing legal advice.

Jones said Romo “knows how to get up when he gets knocked down” and highlighted his ability to handle adversity. He added that Romo’s character and love of sport are among his strongest attributes.

"I love him. I love what he’s about. I love his character. I love his love of sport," Jones said.

CBS Sports announced that Romo has been placed on leave from his role as a top NFL analyst pending further review. The network indicated that former defensive end J.J. Watt will fill Romo’s spot in the broadcast booth alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.

Romo, who retired from the NFL in 2017 after a 13-season career with the Cowboys, posted 34,183 passing yards, 248 touchdowns and a 65.3% completion rate.
