Detroit Tigers prospect Max Clark shows power and speed in early MLB appearances

Résumé

Top prospect Max Clark recorded a two-run homer and multiple extra-base hits as the Tigers beat the Athletics 8-6, highlighting his blend of power and speed.

The Detroit Tigers defeated the Oakland Athletics 8-6 on Saturday, with top prospect Max Clark contributing a two-run home run and several key hits. Clark entered the game as a recent call-up, walking in his first plate appearance and later collecting his first MLB hit with a single to left field. In the eighth inning he drove in a run with an RBI double off left-hander Brady Basso and later scored on a defensive error. He added another double in the ninth and scored on a two-run single by Javier Baez.

Clark, the 13th-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline and the third overall pick in the 2023 draft, has been posting strong numbers at Triple-A, hitting .277 with ten home runs and 21 steals in 89 games. His July slash line improved to .338/.466/.620, and he has demonstrated solid plate discipline and speed.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch noted that the team is monitoring veteran Javier Baez’s ankle injury, which could create an opportunity for Clark to see more playing time in center field. Hinch said Baez’s condition is “a high-grade ankle sprain” and that the club expects him to miss at least a couple of weeks.

Clark’s recent performance, including a career-high four hits and his first MLB home run, suggests he could become a regular contributor later in the season, providing both batting average and stolen-base value for Detroit.
