Dow Futures Rise Ahead of Key Economic Data Releases

Summary

U.S. stock futures edged higher as investors anticipate upcoming inflation data and Federal Reserve communications.

U.S. stock futures edged higher on Sunday evening as investors awaited key economic data releases and Federal Reserve communications scheduled for the week. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 68 points, or 0.15%, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures rose by 0.13% and 0.09%, respectively.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note remained steady at 4.285%, following a decline last week amid growing expectations of potential Federal Reserve rate cuts. The U.S. dollar showed minimal movement, decreasing by 0.02% against the euro and increasing by 0.02% against the yen.

In commodities, gold prices fell by 0.93% to $3,458.90 per ounce, as markets awaited clarification from the Trump administration regarding tariffs on Swiss gold. U.S. oil prices declined by 0.39% to $63.63 per barrel, with Brent crude dropping 0.32% to $66.38.

The upcoming release of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for July, scheduled for Tuesday, is expected to provide insights into the impact of recent tariffs on inflation. Wall Street anticipates a 0.2% monthly increase in the overall CPI and a 0.3% rise in the core CPI. Year-over-year, the headline CPI is projected to accelerate to 2.8% growth from 2.7% in June, with the core rate expected to increase to 3.1% from 2.9%.

Additionally, the Producer Price Index (PPI) is set for release on Thursday, with analysts forecasting a 0.2% monthly increase in the headline PPI and a 0.3% rise in the core PPI.

Several Federal Reserve officials are scheduled to speak throughout the week, coinciding with the appointment of Stephen Miran as a new governor, adding a dovish vote to the central bank. Despite recent criticisms of the Federal Reserve and calls for rate cuts from the White House, Wall Street remains optimistic about the stock market's outlook.

Morgan Stanley's Mike Wilson recently suggested that a new bull market has commenced, maintaining his forecast that the S&P 500 could reach 7,200 by mid-2026. Similarly, Oppenheimer's chief investment strategist, John Stoltzfus, raised his S&P 500 price target for this year to 7,100 from 5,950, reinstating his initial outlook from December 2024.
