Dodgers acquire Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal from Tigers

Résumé

Los Angeles added two-time AL Cy Young Award pitcher Tarik Skubal in a deadline trade, sending three minor-league prospects to Detroit.

Los Angeles completed a deadline-day trade for right-hander Tarik Skubal, the two-time American League Cy Young Award winner, acquiring him from Detroit. The Dodgers sent three minor-league players – right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith and outfielder Zyhir Hope – to the Tigers in exchange.

Skubal, who posted a 2.79 ERA with 116 strikeouts in 96 2/3 innings for Detroit this season, said he was "excited to be a Dodger" and looked forward to competing for a third consecutive World Series title. He will earn roughly $9.5 million for the remainder of the 2024 season, with a $32 million salary due next year and eligibility for free agency after the postseason.

The addition strengthens an already deep Dodgers rotation that includes Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow. The team leads the majors with a 3.36 ERA among its starters and sits atop the National League West.

Detroit, which has fallen out of wild-card contention, will receive the three prospects as part of its rebuilding effort. Manager A.J. Hinch praised Skubal’s contributions, noting his work ethic and performance over his seven seasons with the Tigers.

Skubal underwent a minor elbow procedure in May and returned to the mound in June, recording his 1,000th career strikeout later in the season.
