Democrats Target Ohio Rep. Max Miller Amid Renewed Abuse Allegations

Résumé

Republicans defend Rep. Max Miller as Democrats call for his resignation and an ethics probe, citing recent domestic-violence claims that could affect the tight 2024 congressional race in Ohio’s 7th district.

U.S. Rep. Max Miller, a former Trump administration adviser, faces renewed scrutiny over domestic-violence allegations made by his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, the daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno. The claims have intensified a legal dispute between the former spouses and prompted Democrats to urge Miller’s resignation and request a congressional ethics investigation.

Democratic officials, including Rep. Shontel Brown, said it would be "wise" for Miller to step down, while members of the House Democratic Women’s Caucus described the reports as "deeply disturbing" and called for serious attention to the allegations. Miller has denied the accusations and filed defamation suits against Moreno and a second accuser.

The race, which Miller won in 2022 with just over 51% of the vote, is now being watched by the House Majority PAC, which said it is monitoring the district as part of its effort to flip more seats. "HMP is willing to do whatever it takes to take back the House, and nothing is off the table," spokesperson CJ Warnke said.

Republican leaders, including Gov. Mike DeWine, have described the accusations as "very serious" but said the decision should rest with voters. Party consultants note that Miller remains favored in the Republican-leaning district, though they acknowledge that a surge of Democratic funding—estimated at around $2 million—could boost challenger Brian Poindexter’s campaign.

The legal battle includes a recent request by Moreno’s lawyers for a temporary restraining order against Miller, alleging he threatened and physically assaulted an attorney involved in the case. Miller’s own lawyer reportedly said the congressman "just can’t control himself," a claim Miller’s campaign has not commented on.

Separately, Miller is being sued by former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham, who alleges he violated a confidential settlement by defaming her in a book and an op-ed. The combined controversies are seen as a potential distraction for Miller as the November election approaches, with some GOP observers warning that the issues could erode his support among conservative voters.
