Chargers evaluate multiple candidates for starting left guard as camp progresses

Summary

Los Angeles Chargers are testing five offensive linemen for the left guard position ahead of their first padded practice, with coaches saying the true assessment will begin once players wear pads.

Los Angeles – The Chargers have rotated five different linemen at left guard during the first four days of training camp, indicating a wide-open competition for the starting role. Kayode Awosika, rookie Jake Slaughter, Trevor Penning, Trey Pipkins III and second-year Branson Taylor each received snaps with the first-team offense in separate sessions.

Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel said the team must keep an open mind while evaluating the players and that the real test will start with the first padded practice scheduled for Tuesday in San Diego. > "What you’re trying to do is get them comfortable, so that job competition can really take root," he explained. He added that footwork, movement, eye discipline and body position can be judged in non-padded drills, but the final decision will depend on how players perform with full contact.

Taylor, a sixth-round pick who started the final game of last season, has returned in better shape and is working at both guard and tackle. Pipkins, previously a tackle, was moved inside last season and is considered a good fit for the zone-run scheme. Penning, acquired from the Saints, has been used at tackle but is viewed as strongest at guard. Slaughter, a recent second-round pick, is transitioning from center to left guard, while Awosika signed a one-year deal after playing 259 snaps for Detroit last season.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh said he expects to narrow the field after roughly 10 to 13 more practices, aiming for a decision by the third week of August. The Chargers will hold a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers on Aug. 18 and meet them again in the second preseason game on Aug. 20.

Other camp notes include edge rusher Tuli Tuipulotu remaining in contract talks but participating in drills, and several offensive highlights such as receiver Ladd McConkey’s deep catch and rookie cornerback Avery Smith’s two pass breakups during 11-on-11 play.
