Chargers dominate joint practice against 49ers as injuries sideline several players

Summary

In a combined training session, the Los Angeles Chargers outperformed the San Francisco 49ers, highlighted by Justin Herbert's play, while both teams dealt with injuries to key personnel.

Los Angeles offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel watched quarterback Justin Herbert execute the Chargers' offense for the first time against a rival defense during a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers in El Segundo, California. Herbert connected on several big plays with receivers Quentin Johnston, Ladd McConkey, Omarion Hampton and free-agent acquisition David Njoku.

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy acknowledged his unit struggled, saying the offense was "not our best day" and that fundamentals were off. He added that the team could have shown more intensity.

The practice also highlighted injury concerns. Chargers center Tyler Biadasz left on a cart after a leg injury caused by a collision with left guard Kayode Awosika, and rookie Jake Slaughter stepped in as his replacement. Johnston briefly exited with a leg issue before returning for limited activity. For San Francisco, tight end Mike Evans was taken out after experiencing quad tightness, while receiver Christian Kirk remains sidelined with a calf injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan described Evans' condition as non-serious.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed that Herbert and other starters will receive at least one series in the upcoming preseason game against the 49ers. Herbert praised the live reps against a different defense, noting the value for the offensive line and receivers.

Running back Omarion Hampton showcased physicality with consecutive runs that broke through the line and took down defenders, a result of offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel’s emphasis on a more forceful ground game. Herbert lauded Hampton’s toughness and leadership.

San Francisco coach Shanahan refuted speculation that All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey was holding out for a new contract, stating the player missed practice due to tightness rather than dissatisfaction. He declined to provide further details, adding that McCaffrey would be available if it were game week. Rookie Kaelon Black displayed strong running in McCaffrey’s absence.
