Judge refuses to pause Minnesota law restricting "nudify" apps
A federal judge denied xAI's request for an emergency injunction, allowing Minnesota's new ban on image-nudifying apps to take effect while the lawsuit continues.
U.S. District Judge Donovan Frank rejected a temporary restraining order sought by artificial-intelligence firm xAI, permitting Minnesota's recently enacted ban on apps that alter photos to create nudified images to go into force on August 1. Frank noted that xAI filed the request on July 29, 2026, nearly three months after the legislation was signed and only three days before its effective date, indicating the alleged harm was not immediate. > "Such a delay in bringing the action and the motion suggests that harm is not immediate," Frank wrote. The court's decision does not end xAI's legal challenge; the company maintains that the law is overly broad and that less restrictive measures could achieve the same objectives.
