Teen lifeguard describes rescue of 10-year-old at California beach

Summary

Sixteen-year-old Ryder Williams recounted the July 25 rescue of 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai from 8-10-foot waves at Seabright State Beach, highlighting the challenges and teamwork involved.

Sixteen-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams detailed the July 25 rescue of 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, where strong 8- to 10-foot surf threatened the boy’s life. Williams said he spotted the child after a wave knocked him down in ankle-deep water, dropped his gear and entered the surf, noting that “fins were ineffective” and the boy went limp as he tried to secure him.

Williams described focusing on maintaining his position until a partner arrived, saying he “just need[ed] to hold my position until my partner can get here because I’m not going to be able to get him out on my own.” When other beachgoers entered the water, he instructed them to return to shore. His partner soon took over holding the child while Williams supported the effort, and together they dragged the boy to safety.

Nathaniel’s father, Sumit Rai, thanked Williams, stating that his son survived after “being thrown another 15-20 feet” and was in shock after coughing up sand on shore. Williams emphasized that rescues are a routine part of lifeguard duties, noting he returned to his tower after the incident and continued making safety contacts and additional rescues later that day.

He highlighted the importance of public awareness of ocean conditions and rip currents, urging beachgoers to consult lifeguards or research conditions before entering the water. Williams said the experience reinforced his commitment to lifeguarding, describing it as “awesome to get to come out and help people every day.”
