Giants see progress at training camp, coach says team took good step

Résumé

Head coach John Harbaugh said the New York Giants made noticeable improvement on day four of the 2026 training camp, highlighting better offensive execution and tighter defensive play.

New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh said the team made a "good step" forward on the fourth day of the 2026 training camp, noting that players showed better execution compared with earlier sessions.

Harbaugh emphasized that the measure of progress is incremental improvement, stating, "You don’t really measure too much. You just try to do as good as you can at everything you can. I felt like today was a good step because a lot of the things that we were working on from yesterday and the first couple of days, we saw the improvement today in terms of execution. So that’s what you really want to see is better today than you were yesterday. It’s kind of the measuring stick. I felt like we did that today."

The coach highlighted the offense’s reduced penalty rate, with only one false start after several in the first three practices, and praised the use of more complex cadences. He added, "The operation was better on offense, for sure. We’re pushing the envelope on all the cadences. It’s not like we’re protecting it and going simple cadences. There was a lot of tough cadences, and for the most part, we did a really good job of it."

Among the notable performances, wide receiver Odell Beckham caught a 25-yard touchdown from quarterback Jameis Winston, and rookie tight end Theo Johnson made several strong catches after earlier struggles. Rookie placekicker Dominic Zvada converted 13 of 14 attempts, including two long kicks of roughly 51 yards.

Defensive highlights included safety Paulson Adebo intercepting a pass for a touchdown after a tip from linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, and Edmunds himself recording an interception. Rookie linebacker Jack Kelly also made impactful plays in both 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.

Co-owner John Mara visited the practice, walking off the field with Harbaugh and general manager Joe Schoen. Wide receiver Malik Nabers participated in a limited capacity after recovering from a torn ACL.

Harbaugh said the team will move to full-pad, wrap-and-release drills on Monday, noting the increased physicality but confirming that the overall scheme will remain unchanged. He warned that players must stay on their feet, referencing a hard hit on tight end Isaiah Likely during a late-practice, must-score scenario.

The Giants will have their first off day on Sunday before resuming practice for six consecutive days and then returning to East Rutherford, New Jersey.
