Disney+ cancels Marvel series "Wonder Man" after initially renewing it for a second season

Résumé

Disney+ has halted production of the Marvel series "Wonder Man" despite a prior renewal, releasing the writers and leaving the show without a second season.

Disney+ announced that the Marvel series "Wonder Man" will not move forward with a second season, reversing an earlier decision to renew the show. Variety reported that the series' writers have been released to work on other projects.

The first season, a satirical take on superhero narratives, earned critical praise and a surprise Emmy nomination for lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Abdul-Mateen responded to the cancellation, saying, "> That's life, right? Everything will shake out."

The series, which holds a 91 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, follows actor Simon Williams as he auditions for a reboot of the titular superhero and becomes entangled with a character linked to the Department of Damage Control. Reports suggest that the characters could appear in future Marvel productions.

Creator Destin Daniel Cretton, also known for the film "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," and co-creator Andrew Guest developed the show. Abdul-Mateen, previously recognized for roles in "The Matrix Resurrections" and the "Aquaman" franchise, is also an Emmy nominee in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category.
