Mets, Tigers and Others Gear Up for Trade Deadline Pitcher Moves
The Mets and Tigers have scratched several starting pitchers as trade deadline speculation intensifies, while the market for top starters remains largely on hold pending a potential Tarik Skubal deal.
The Minnesota Twins acquired reliever A.J. Minter from the New York Mets on Thursday night, but the transaction appears to be an isolated move as the trade market remains largely quiet on Friday.
New York withdrew right-hander Freddy Peralta from his scheduled start, with manager Andy Green saying that “talks have intensified” about the pitcher, who is expected to be dealt before the deadline despite a high asking price.
Sources indicated that the Mets could either trade Peralta for a top prospect or consider a qualifying offer if a deal does not materialize. Other players the Mets could move by the deadline include Clay Holmes, Luke Weaver, Brooks Raley, Luis Robert Jr., Tyrone Taylor and Huascar Brazobàn.
Detroit also scratched a starter, leaving Casey Mize out of the rotation, a move viewed as preparation for a possible fire-sale similar to the 2022 trade of Jack Flaherty. An American League executive remarked that “the trades will happen; we may just have to wait until Sunday or Monday for the real action to begin.”
The Tigers’ potential sell-off could affect the broader starting-pitcher market, especially as teams await the destination of two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal. The Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, Tampa Bay Rays, Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs are considered the most likely destinations, with the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies also mentioned as interested parties.
Several executives suggested that until Skubal is traded, other high-profile starters such as Kevin Gausman, Mize, Holmes and Robbie Ray are likely to remain on the sidelines. Additional pitchers with expiring contracts who could be moved include Brady Singer, Shane Bieber and Foster Griffin, though Griffin started for Washington on Friday as the Nationals evaluate their options.
An AL executive noted that “it feels like just one [starting pitcher] has to break through to get it rolling,” indicating that teams may hold off on other deals until a marquee trade is confirmed. Controllable arms such as Hunter Greene, Reid Detmers, Jose Soriano, Emerson Hancock, Luis Castillo and Braxton Garrett are less likely to be affected by the Skubal situation, but none were reported as close to being traded as of Friday.
