WNBA star Brittney Griner files for divorce in Georgia

Summary

Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife Cherelle Griner in Fulton County, Georgia, seeking joint custody of their son and an equitable division of assets.

WNBA player Brittney Griner filed for divorce from her wife Cherelle Griner in the Superior Court of Fulton County, Georgia, according to court documents. The petition, filed on Thursday, states that the couple, married since June 2018, have been separated since July 24, 2026, and that the marriage is "irretrievably broken" with no hope of reconciliation. Both parents are requesting joint physical custody of their son, Bash, born in 2024, and an equitable division of all marital debts and assets, including real and personal property.

"This is a matter we hope the parties can resolve privately. There is no further comment at this time," an attorney for Brittney Griner told ABC News.

Cherelle Griner was not immediately available for comment. The filing follows Griner's high-profile release from Russian detention in December 2022 after a nine-year prison sentence was commuted in a prisoner swap.

The divorce comes after four years since Griner's return to the United States, during which Cherelle Griner publicly advocated for her wife's release.
