Jurors Tour Home Where Massachusetts Mother Killed Three Children

Resumen

A Massachusetts jury visited the house where Lindsay Clancy is accused of strangling her three children, allowing them to see the interior and yard as part of the trial evidence.

Jurors in the trial of Lindsay Clancy were escorted inside the Duxbury, Mass., house where the three children died, and later walked the yard where Clancy was found after jumping from a second-story window. The 40-minute supervised visit, conducted in groups of six, followed a drive past a nearby restaurant and pharmacy that were part of the prosecution’s timeline of events on the night of the killings.

Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, has not seen the home since the incident. Her defense team argues she suffered from postpartum psychosis, a rare mental illness that can be triggered by hormonal changes and sleep deprivation after childbirth. While her attorneys do not dispute that she caused the deaths of her children—Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months—they contend that she was experiencing severe bipolar disorder and auditory hallucinations that compelled her to act.

If convicted of murder, Clancy faces life imprisonment without parole; a verdict of not guilty by reason of mental illness would result in commitment to a state mental health facility. The jury’s visit is an uncommon step in U.S. criminal trials, typically avoided to prevent exposure to altered crime scenes, but courts may permit such excursions to help jurors assess spatial details not evident in photographs.
