Creators Explain Surprise Return of Big Bang Theory Characters in Stuart Fails To Save The Universe Episode Two
The show's creators said the alternate-universe setting allows characters like Penny to have different relationships, and actors enjoyed portraying unfamiliar versions of their roles.
HBO Max’s series Stuart Fails To Save The Universe returns in its second episode with the surprise appearance of Kaley Cuoco’s Penny and Brian Thomas Smith’s Zack, a character originally introduced on The Big Bang Theory as Penny’s on-and-off boyfriend. In this alternate timeline, Penny leads a resistance against an artificial-intelligence regime that enforces perpetual happiness through shock collars, and Zack serves as her second-in-command.
Showrunners Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady and Zak Penn said the multiverse premise lets each character have a distinct history. “Because that’s what happened in that universe, we don’t know what Leonard is doing in that universe,” Prady explained. Lorre added that the setting eliminates familiar elements such as the Cheesecake Factory, underscoring the characters’ divergent experiences.
The episode also features returning cast members Kunal Nayyar, Christine Baranski and Riki Lindhome. Baranski portrays a version of Leonard’s mother who hosts a re-education program, while Lindhome appears as a harsher incarnation of her former guest role, Ramona Nowitzki.
When asked about the darker tone of the spinoff, Prady said the series is intended to go “beyond” the original sitcom’s format. Lorre noted that playing unfamiliar versions of established characters was “fun for the actors,” and Penn said many participants enjoy “playing the bad guy.”
The episode concludes with Penny, Zack and others incapacitated by an AI-launched drone attack, while Stuart, Bert, Kripke and Denise use a device originally built by Leonard and Sheldon to jump to another universe.
