First responders describe scene after Massachusetts mother killed three children

Police and fire officials testified about the condition of the victims and the mother, who survived a suicide attempt, as the trial focuses on the defendant's mental state.

First responders gave jurors a detailed account Thursday of what they encountered at a home in Plymouth, Massachusetts, after Lindsay Clancy killed her three children and attempted suicide. The testimony followed a 911 call made by her then-husband, Patrick Clancy, who discovered the bodies of his 3-year-old son, 5-year-old daughter and 8-month-old infant after returning from an errand in January 2023.

Officers Stephen Hall and Brian Josephine of the Duxbury Police Department arrived at the residence before Patrick Clancy realized the children had been strangled with exercise bands in the basement. Hall said the husband was shouting for help from behind the house while his wife lay in the snow, intermittently conscious after jumping from a second-story window. Patrick Clancy entered the house and told officers, "I can't wake them up — I can't get them up!" Josephine testified that only the infant had a faint pulse.

Fire department supervisor PJ Hussey described seeing Patrick Clancy attempting to remove an exercise band from a child's neck through a basement window and noted that the scene quickly became chaotic as additional ambulances arrived.

The trial centers on whether Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, was suffering from postpartum psychosis, a rare condition linked to hormonal changes and sleep deprivation after childbirth. Her lawyers acknowledge the killings but argue she was not criminally responsible because of the mental illness. Prosecutors contend she acted intentionally. If convicted of murder, she faces life imprisonment without parole; a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity would result in commitment to a state mental health facility.
