Red Sox Consider Aggressive Moves at Trade Deadline
Boston Red Sox insiders say the team may pursue major trades, targeting players such as Zach Neto, Jeremy Pena, CJ Abrams, Otto Lopez and possibly Bobby Witt Jr., while also addressing offensive needs.
Boston Red Sox officials are reportedly preparing to make significant moves before the trade deadline as the club seeks to strengthen its roster for a postseason run. ESPN reporter Jeff Passan said the team "is going big" and cited potential targets including Angels infielder Zach Neto, Astros catcher Jeremy Pena, Washington shortstop CJ Abrams and Marlins All-Star shortstop Otto Lopez.
The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey added that acquiring Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. would likely require a substantial package, possibly involving outfielders Anthony Santander and Luis Arraez along with pitchers Payton Tolle and Eyanson.
Analysts note the Red Sox need to improve offensive production, referencing a study that shows teams reaching the League Championship Series since 2020 typically rank among the league leaders in runs per game.
Separately, pitcher Curtis Mead, who recently returned to Boston, has been cleared of surgery for a fractured wrist and is expected to be ready within a six- to eight-week window, aligning with the season's final weeks.
The club's bullpen, bolstered by reliever Tyron Guerrero, has also contributed to shortening games for opponents, with Guerrero maintaining a low walk rate of 3 percent.
