Chiefs adjust offensive line and experiment with defensive roles in Day 2 camp practice

Kansas City held its second full-team training-camp practice on Thursday in St. Joe, concluding with punt-team drills as rain fell. Wide receiver Rashee Rice and cornerback L’Jarius Sneed participated only partially while defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott remained on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane took part in all phases wearing a non-contact jersey.

The offensive line saw a notable change: rookie Kahlil Benson started at right tackle, replacing veteran Jaylon Moore, who shifted to left tackle for the second-team unit. Center Creed Humphrey praised Benson’s work ethic and physical strength, adding that the team is "excited about him." Humphrey also highlighted left tackle Josh Simmons’ potential, saying his development could make him a "very talented player in this league."

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo discussed adjustments on the secondary, noting that safety Chamarri Conner, who previously played more at safety, will receive additional deep-coverage reps. Free-agent signing Kader Kohou saw increased time in the nickel role, while rookie Jadon Canady contributed a pass breakup for the third-team defense. Safety Jaden Hicks continued to work primarily with the second-team unit as the coaches seek a definitive position for him.

Spagnuolo also mentioned experiments with defensive end Ashton Gillotte, who has been used in a linebacker-like role to test versatility across the front seven. He indicated the staff will continue evaluating players for multi-position capabilities.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes worked on downfield timing, completing a long pass to wide receiver Xavier Worthy that landed out of bounds and later connecting on a touchdown after Worthy outran coverage. Tight end Jared Wiley remained a frequent target, though a dropped pass resulted in an interception. Backup quarterback Justin Fields displayed accuracy on deep throws, with wide receiver Cyrus Allen making a notable catch on an intermediate route. "He's eager to learn," said wide receiver Tyquan Thornton of Allen.
