Los Angeles officials set deadline for cleanup of burned cold-storage warehouse

Résumé

Mayor Karen Bass gave Lineage Logistics until Aug. 13 to clear a 500,000-square-foot cold-storage facility that burned in June, after residents reported lingering odors and pest infestations.

A fire that engulfed a 500,000-square-foot cold-storage warehouse in Los Angeles on June 17 left behind rotting meat and a persistent odor that continues to affect nearby neighborhoods. The blaze, which produced thick smoke over Boyle Heights and East Los Los Angeles for several days, destroyed roughly 85 million pounds of beef, pork, poultry and seafood stored by Lineage Logistics.

Mayor Karen Bass announced that the company must complete site cleanup by Aug. 13, and Lineage Logistics said it is working to meet the deadline. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Residents say the lingering smell, described as a mix of mold and decaying animal matter, has attracted rats and bottle flies. Community members have also expressed concerns about possible health risks and criticized the city’s response as insufficient.
