Jurors Hear First Responders' Account of Massachusetts Family Tragedy

During the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, police and fire officials described the scene they encountered after she killed her three children and attempted suicide.

First responders testified Thursday about the conditions they found at a Plymouth, Mass., home where Lindsay Clancy killed her three children and then tried to end her own life. The testimony followed jurors' hearing of a 911 call made by her husband, Patrick Clancy, who discovered the bodies of 3-year-old Dawson, 5-year-old Cora and 8-month-old Callan after returning from an errand in January 2023.

Officers Stephen Hall and Brian Josephine of the Duxbury Police Department arrived at the house before Patrick Clancy realized the children had been strangled with exercise bands in the basement. Hall said Patrick Clancy was shouting for help from behind the house while his wife lay in the snow, intermittently conscious after jumping from a second-story window. The officers attended to her as Patrick entered, telling them he could not wake the children. Josephine testified that only the infant had a faint pulse.

Fire department supervisor PJ Hussey described seeing Patrick Clancy attempt to remove an exercise band from a child's neck through a basement window, noting that the situation quickly became chaotic as additional ambulances arrived.

The trial centers on Clancy’s mental state. Her attorneys acknowledge the killings but argue she suffered postpartum psychosis, a rare condition linked to hormonal changes and sleep deprivation after childbirth. Prosecutors contend she acted intentionally and is criminally responsible. If convicted of murder, she faces life imprisonment without parole; a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity would result in commitment to a state mental health facility.
