Detroit Tigers expected to promote top prospect Max Clark for upcoming series

Résumé

The Tigers plan to call up 21-year-old outfielder Max Clark from Triple-A Toledo before their road series against the Oakland Athletics, citing recent offensive production and roster needs.

Detroit is set to promote highly regarded prospect Max Clark to the major-league roster ahead of its Friday night series in Sacramento, according to reports from Baseball America and The Athletic Detroit. The move comes as the club deals with an injured-list placement for outfielder Matt Vierling and a slump by left-handed center fielder James Outman.

Clark, 21, has posted a 1.086 OPS for July at Triple-A Toledo, including five home runs and a balanced .802 OPS from both sides of the plate. His contact metrics are strong, with a 5.3 percent swinging-strike rate, a 22.2 percent chase rate and a 15.3 percent overall strikeout rate. He also recorded 21 stolen bases with only two caught stealing this season.

Scouts note that Clark’s speed and defensive ability in center field represent an upgrade over the current options, and his disciplined approach at the plate could provide a leadoff-type presence for Detroit. While his power is expected to develop further at the major-league level, the organization appears confident that his overall skill set addresses immediate roster gaps.

The promotion will also start Clark’s service time, making him ineligible for rookie status beyond the 2027 season under the current collective bargaining agreement. The Tigers have not commented publicly on the timing of the call-up or any related trade considerations.
