Patriots outline initial 53-man roster projections ahead of padded practices

Summary

New England’s training camp roster list shows competition at several positions as the team prepares for its first full-padded practice on Thursday.

New England Patriots coaches released an early projection of the 53-man roster as the team approaches its first full-padded practice on Thursday. The list, compiled from the first days of camp, highlights depth-chart battles across the roster.

Quarterbacks Drake Maye, Tommy DeVito and Behren Morton remain the only QBs in camp, with no notable controversy. At running back, Rhamondre Stevenson, TreVeyon Henderson, Reggie Gilliam and Lan Larison are listed as in, while Jam Miller, Terrell Jennings and Myles Montgomery are out. The competition for the third-running-back spot is expected to hinge on special-teams contributions.

Wide receiver additions include A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs, Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas and Efton Chism, while Kyle Williams, Kyle Dixon, Nick DeGennaro, Cameron Dorner and Kobe Prentice are out. Coach Mike Vrabel praised Williams, but his limited impact on the second-team offense suggests his roster spot may depend on winning the kick-returner role.

At tight end, Hunter Henry, Eli Raridon and Tanner Arkin are in, with Jack Westover, CJ Dippre, Mitch Van Vooren and Jeremiah Franklin out. The loss of Julian Hill to a season-ending injury has increased scrutiny on the rookie tight ends, particularly Arkin’s size and blocking ability.

The offensive line roster lists several incumbents and newcomers, including Will Campbell, Alijah Vera-Tucker and Morgan Moses, while Caedan Wallace and others are out. Defensive line projections feature Dre’Mont Jones, Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, Harold Landry III and others, with concerns noted about edge-rusher depth.

Linebacker depth includes Robert Spillane, Christian Elliss, K.J. Britt and Namdi Obiazor, with the defensive scheme expected to favor additional defensive backs. Cornerbacks Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis III, Marcus Jones and others are in, while safety Kevin Byard, Craig Woodson and several younger players remain on the roster.

Special-teams players Andy Borregales, Bryce Baringer and Julian Ashby are listed as in, with Vrabel noting Baringer’s calming presence as a holder despite a sub-par Super Bowl punt.

The projected roster will be refined as preseason games begin and the team finalizes its depth chart.
