Patriots preview eight players to watch in preseason debut against Colts
New England will open its preseason at Gillette Stadium on Thursday, with coach Mike Vrabel confirming quarterback Drake Maye will sit out and highlighting several backs, receivers, and defensive prospects as key watch points.
The New England Patriots will face the Indianapolis Colts in their preseason opener on Thursday night at Gillette Stadium after completing 14 training-camp practices. Head coach Mike Vrabel said starting quarterback Drake Maye will not play, meaning many regular-season starters are expected to remain on the sideline.
Running back depth will be a focus, with Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson leading the unit. Terrell Jennings, who returned from the NFI list, has taken on a third-back role and also contributed on kick returns, while second-year Lan Larison and rookie Jam Miller are also in the mix.
Wide receiver Kyle Williams, an offseason award winner, has drawn praise from Vrabel for his speed and release skills. "I really, really know that Kyle is going to help us. His speed is going to help us," Vrabel said, noting Williams' recent long receptions in practice.
Rookie tight end Eli Raridon has emerged as the top option behind Hunter Henry in 12-personnel sets. Maye complimented him, saying, "He is a big dude, first off, that can run. I mean, that’s pretty cool, and he is smart."
On the offensive line, first-round pick Caleb Lomu is expected to see action, potentially sharing duties with veteran Ben Brown and second-year Marcus Bryant as the Patriots search for depth at tackle and interior positions.
Edge-rusher second-round pick Gabe Jacas, noted for his size and explosiveness, will likely receive significant snaps against the Colts. Fellow rookies Quintayvious Hutchins, Xavier Holmes and second-year Bradyn Swinson are also slated to compete for pass-rushing roles.
Undrafted linebacker Khalil Jacobs has positioned himself as a possible fourth option behind Robert Spillane and Christian Elliss. Vrabel highlighted his play speed, stating, "He loves just kind of when you put the ball down to play. When you get to the team periods, you kind of notice his play speed, and I think that’s a great thing to say."
Cornerback depth will be tested after injuries to Carlton Davis, Christian Gonzalez and Charles Woods. Veteran Kindle Vildor leads the group, with younger players such as fifth-round rookie Karon Prunty, Kobee Minor and Channing Canada also receiving reps.
