Alpha Capricornids and Southern Delta Aquariids set to peak tonight

摘要

The Alpha Capricornids and Southern Delta Aquariids meteor showers will reach their peak around midnight on July 30, offering up to 25 meteors per hour under dark skies.

The Alpha Capricornids and Southern Delta Aquariids meteor showers are expected to peak late Thursday night, around midnight, and continue into the early hours of Friday, according to the American Meteor Society (AMS). The Southern Delta Aquariids, active since July 12, could produce roughly 25 meteors per hour under completely dark conditions, while the Alpha Capricornids, which have been active since early July, typically yield about five meteors per hour but are known for bright, slow-moving fireballs.

Both showers are the result of Earth passing through debris trails left by comets. The Southern Delta Aquariids originate from the constellation Aquarius, near the star Delta Aquarii, and are best viewed from locations in the southern United States or other sites closer to the equator. The Alpha Capricornids will be visible from the northern hemisphere as well, though they are generally weaker.

NASA advises observers to seek sites away from city lights, allow about half an hour for eye adaptation, and avoid using phones or other bright devices. The optimal viewing window is after midnight, with the display lasting until dawn, providing ample opportunity to spot meteors.
