White Sox rally in 12th inning to beat Yankees 6-5

Résumé

Edgar Quero delivered a walk-off single in the 12th inning as Chicago White Sox overcame a 5-4 deficit to defeat the New York Yankees 6-5.

Edgar Quero capped a comeback for the Chicago White Sox with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning, giving the team a 6-5 win over the New York Yankees. The victory, which came after the White Sox erased a four-run deficit, puts them in a position to split the three-game series.

Yankees starter Cam Schlittler was dominant through six innings, allowing no runs and striking out batters with fastballs that reached 100 mph. He exited after 93 pitches, leaving the game with a 1.10 ERA in road starts. Reliever Paul Blackburn entered for New York in the seventh inning, but surrendered a two-run homer to Sam Antonacci and a solo shot to Munetaka Murakami, giving Chicago a 4-0 lead.

The game remained tight, with the Yankees tying it 4-4 in the eighth. In the 11th, Anthony Volpe delivered a sacrifice fly to put New York ahead 5-4, but a misplay by catcher Ali Sanchez—an errant throw that allowed Murakami to score—tied the game again. After a scoreless 12th, Jordan Hicks struck out Yankees slugger Ben Rice with the bases loaded.

In the final at-bat, Quero hit a bloop single that traveled 227 feet at 68.4 mph, allowing Tristan Peters to slide home for the winning run. The White Sox bullpen combined for six innings of work, allowing one run on four hits while striking out five.

For New York, starter Schlittler’s early dominance was offset by the bullpen’s struggles. White Sox pitcher Davis Martin, who gave up four runs in the first inning, settled down to pitch five scoreless innings, finishing with five strikeouts on 106 pitches.

The win narrows the gap between Chicago and Cleveland in the AL Central and gives the White Sox a chance to improve their standing against Minnesota in the upcoming games.
