49ers navigate training camp with head coach recovering from car accident
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan attended practice in a limited capacity while recovering from a July car crash, and the team evaluated roster battles on both sides of the ball during camp in Santa Clara.
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, still recuperating from a July 14 car accident, observed Wednesday's training-camp practice from the sidelines alongside general manager John Lynch and defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. Shanahan, in his tenth season, did not participate on the field but remained engaged, with offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak handling communication to quarterback Brock Purdy's helmet. The team noted that Shanahan's recovery is progressing unevenly, with lingering concussion symptoms, and his regular team meetings have been temporarily suspended in favor of separate offensive and defensive sessions.
The camp highlighted several position battles. Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, a 2024 first-round pick, dealt with a recurring PCL injury, raising concerns about his availability. Veteran receivers Mike Evans and Christian Kirk are expected to remain key contributors, while younger players Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins are viewed as potential developmental pieces. Rookie De’Zhaun Stribling, a 33rd-overall pick, has shown promise as a physical target.
On the offensive line, competition for the left-guard spot involves Connor Colby, Brett Toth, Robert Jones and Carver Willis, each vying to replace Spencer Burford. The running-back depth chart also saw movement after second-rounder Jordan James suffered a rib fracture, opening a chance for rookie Kaelon Black.
Defensively, linebackers Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw returned to health, providing veteran leadership. Backup linebacker Tatum Bethune and Garret Wallow added depth, while secondary coach Raheem Morris emphasized the progress of cornerback Renardo Green and the contributions of Deommodore Lenoir, Upton Stout, and Jack Jones. The defensive line featured returning players Mykel Williams, Alfred Collins, and promising performances from C.J. West at nose tackle and third-rounder Romello Height.
Overall, the 49ers used the camp session to assess health status, evaluate talent across the roster, and prepare for the upcoming season while awaiting Shanahan’s full return.
