Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was cited for possessing an open container of alcohol after being arrested for operating while intoxicated in Wisconsin last week. Police records show three citations were issued, covering the open container, operating under the influence and unsafe passing on the right. The citations note that an open bottle was observed on the passenger side of Romo's 2020 Jeep, which was later inventory-checked before being towed.
Body-camera footage released to the media shows Romo telling officers he was coming from a golf course and claiming he had consumed "zero" drinks. He questioned the officer’s assessment, asking, "Because I’m coming from a golf course, you think I’m drunk?" Romo also recorded part of the encounter on his phone before being detained.
After being taken to a police station for field-sobriety tests, the arresting officer reported observing red, glassy eyes and the smell of alcohol on Romo’s breath. Romo declined to submit to a breath test, stating he had been advised by lawyers not to do so. He is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 21.
Romo, who retired from the NFL in 2017 and now works as a CBS color commentator, withdrew from the upcoming M&P Group Texas State Open after the incident. He has not publicly commented on the arrest.
