Chiefs offensive coordinator's wife transferred out of ICU after alleged shooting by son
Mia Bieniemy, wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was moved from intensive care following a weekend shooting at their Virginia home, while their son faces charges.
Mia Bieniward, 57, was transferred out of intensive care on Wednesday, according to head coach Andy Reid, who provided the update during Chiefs training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri. Reid said she is "doing great" and making progress after being shot Sunday at the couple's home in Ashburn, Virginia.
Police say the suspect was the Bieniemos' 27-year-old son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, who was arrested on suspicion of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. A Loudoun County criminal complaint states he fired a .22-caliber Ruger, injuring his mother’s left forearm, left shoulder and chest. He is being held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, with a court date set for Aug. 31.
Authorities have described the incident as a domestic disturbance and have not released a motive. Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman noted that Mia Bieniemy was able to call 911 herself. A spokesperson for the county sheriff’s office confirmed detectives have spoken with her at the hospital.
Eric Bieniemy, 56, remains with the Chiefs as the team prepares for its preseason opener on Aug. 15. Reid said the organization stays in touch with Bieniemy and provides him with practice footage. No comment was obtained from the public defender representing Elijah Bieniemy.
