Jared Leto's 2020 Mars Island Retreat Reexamined Amid New Assault Allegations

The 2020 wellness retreat on Croatia's private Mars Island, once described as a spiritual gathering for fans, has drawn renewed scrutiny as four women allege sexual misconduct by the actor in a BBC documentary.

In August 2020, Jared Leto organized a three-day, alcohol-free retreat on the uninhabited Croatian island of Obonjan, marketed to members of his band Thirty Seconds to Mars' fan community, known as The Echelon. Attendees participated in swimming, sunbathing, yoga, meditation, chanting and barefoot lounging, while the event was promoted as a "spiritual retreat" and priced at over $6,499 per person.

Images from the retreat showed Leto and participants dressed in white, with the singer standing on a cliff and fans gathered below, prompting some observers to compare the atmosphere to a cult. A 2019 tweet from the band's official account referenced the term "cult" in connection with Mars Island.

The retreat followed earlier fan events, including a 2015 adults-only gathering in Malibu called "Camp Mars," which featured campfires, archery, hiking and nightly concerts dubbed "Church of Mars." Camp Mars concluded in 2019, and a planned 2022 Mars Island event never materialized.

The Mars Island gathering has resurfaced in media coverage after a BBC documentary alleged that four women, using pseudonyms, experienced sexual misconduct by Leto when they were teenagers. Leto issued a statement denying the accusations, calling them "absolutely and categorically false" and asserting he has never sexually assaulted anyone.

The renewed focus on Leto's fan events coincides with past reports describing the band's embrace of a "cult" image, including merchandise bearing the phrase "This is a Cult" and media commentary noting the group's self-referential marketing.

"The allegations are absolutely and categorically false," Leto said in a statement to the outlet.

The documentary and related reporting have prompted renewed discussion of the nature of Leto's fan gatherings and the broader implications of celebrity-led events.
